Five Times Sit to Stand

Draft — not clinically reviewed

5xSTS · Functional mobility · v0.1.0 · effective 2026-08-17

Time taken to stand and sit five times from a standard chair. Used as an indicator of lower-extremity strength and transfer ability.

Instructions

  • The patient sits on a standard-height chair with arms folded across the chest.
  • On 'go', they stand fully and sit down five times as quickly as they safely can.
  • Timing starts on the word 'go' and stops the moment they are seated after the fifth repetition.
  • If the patient must push off with their arms, record it below: the time is not comparable to a no-arms trial.

Trial

The standard protocol is performed with arms folded across the chest.

Cutoffs for this test are diagnosis-specific. Selecting a population applies its cutoff.

For example, 'rolling walker' or 'single-point cane'.
